A steel pipe fitting for welding pipe ends to pressurised vessels for very strict safety regulations, e.g. to a large-bore gate valve housing in nuclear reactor systems, is prepd. by applying heat to a pipe end all around the area for the intended weld. Axial upsetting produces an annular bulge which is then formed by external grooved rolls and internal back-up rolls to a dia. of the desired height. The dia. must be adequate to allow the final weld to be inspected during later routine checks by an ultrasonic transducer or an X-ray test head. This is a simple method of making such critical welded seams accessible for routine safety inspection where extremely strict safety regulations apply.
