文本:On a rocky beach in Iceland, two youngsters are on a mission of mercy. Inside their cardboard box, they have two orphans, fledglings plucked from the streets of town, baby puffins. The children of Heimaey have been saving young puffins called pufflings for generations. In fact, at the end of the summer, releasing them by the hundreds to the safety of the sea has become a local tradition."They have to save the birds, well, if they don't do it, they'll die. They find it very exciting."Exciting obviously for the kids who get to throw live birds into the air and watch them fly away. But no doubt it's a little nerve-racking for the recently born pufflings. The problem for the pufflings is that when they are old enough, they leave their burrows in the cliffs and head out to sea. But the lights of the town confuse them. Instead of flying out to sea, they fly into town where they crash land and end up on the streets. That's where the puffling patrols come in. Each night, during the month of August, Moms and Dads lead troops of kids through town looking for wayward pufflings. They use flashlights to search the ground near buildings and street lights. The piers are particularly popular place."Oh hey guys, look it's there, it's there!"When a bird is spotted, the kids rush to scoop it up, and bring it in off the mean streets of Heimaey for the night. It's hard work. The following day all the birds that landed in friendly hands are transported to the seashore, pointed in the right direction, and given their flying orders. The kids seem to be having a great time. Apparently there is a proper way to release the pufflings. First, the proper grip, then, the right technique. With its wings free and flapping, the idea is to cock your arm like a quarterback, and throw a short path. Whether they swim to safety or fly off over the North Atlantic, one wonders what kind of impact all this has on this species as a whole. The world's largest Atlantic puffin colonies are found in Iceland, containing some 8 to 10 million birds. They are still flourishing with a little help from some strong arms and big hearts.23New Delay in Zimbabwe Elections津巴布韦总统决选可能推迟 Concerns about a possible delay in Zimbabwe's presidential run-off election are increasing. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights has warned that the any delay beyond the 21 day limit from May 2 when results were released will be a breach of election law. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, or ZEC, chaired by Judge George Chiweshe who was appointed by President Robert Mugabe, has made it clear it will decide the timing of the second round of the presidential election. The announcement was carried in the State controlled newspaper Sunday Mail. The run-off is necessary, according to the ZEC, because no candidate got more than half the votes cast in the March 29 elections. MDC candidate Morgan Tsvangirai nevertheless decisively outpolled incumbent President Mugabe, the ruling party Zanu-PF candidate. It took the commission five weeks to announce the results and rights lawyers say the delay was an abuse of the electoral law. Now there are reports in various media with connections to Zanu-PF that the run-off will be delayed by at least 40 days. Lawyers have complained that there are more than 120 officials, mostly teachers, from the commission still in detention in connection with the election results. The union representing the teachers claims the ZEC has done little to help the detained officials. When the results were announced, ruling party secretary Emmerson Mnangagwa, made complaints accusing the MDC of bribing its way to victory. He used examples of the illegal recount of 23 constituencies where a handful of votes changed, but did not alter the final result. He also said that Zanu-PF would contest the results of 52 constituencies by petitioning the electoral court which still has to be established. The MDC has said it too will contest results of scores of results it believed it had won. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Monday called for an immediate end to political violence and called on the the police, army, central intelligence organization and Zanu PF militia and so-called war veterans to cease attacking people it suspects voted for the MDC. It also requested that expanded regional and international election observers be allowed immediate entry into Zimbabwe and that all local observers be allowed to continue their duties without further accreditation. Political violence, according to the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, dramatically increased last week and so far about 700 people have been treated and many admitted to hospital with serious injuries. Many thousands of people have been forced out of their homes and many schools have been taken over by militia. The MDC says at least 20 of its members have been killed. Nearly all those interviewed by rights lawyers or doctors say they were attacked because they voted for the MDC in the elections. Mr. Mugabe admits his loyalists killed thousands of oppositon supporters in southern Zimbabwe in the early 1980's.
Glob glob glob, around the Watercooler this morning, the question is simple, but the answer may be complex. What do you think is the happiest country on the planet? Ladies, some guesses? Somewhere in the South Pacific, perhaps. Fiji was a guess over here (one of our...), any place with steel drums. Yes, over there. So we're going with a happy cultural environment? It would have to be an island, I would think, Yes, (yeah) I would think, if not the South Pacific, maybe the Caribbean? I don't know. And you? I know the answer, go.Oh, I would, I would still say America. I'm an Ameri-can, (Oh, you are...) not an Ameri-can't. But let's take a look. David M with the researchers who came up with the answer. Let's see what it is. Yes. The happiest country on earth? Denmark. Researchers at the University of Leicester in England looked at 178 countries. What mattered most? Health, wealth, and education. "Precisely", says the Danish Embassy. We are happy because we have a balance between our work and our private life. How many weeks of vacation? Do you really wanna know? Let me know.5 to 6 weeks. But vacation, she says, is only part of it, there're shorter work weeks, 37 hours on average and higher education and health care for all and when it comes to the people, well, they say they are humble. You say they don't like to brag --, (no) and yet, you'll be happy to tell us that you're happy. We'll be happy to tell we're happy, but then nothing more and we'll do it together. But no bragging? No bragging. But they have reason to and who's behind them? Switzerland, Austria, Iceland and the Bahamas. Where's the US? 23rd, not so bad out of 178. But Denmark is not as big as the ed States, by any means.Definitely not, it's a little smaller than Lake Michigan so er...Denmark?Yes.All of Denmark? All of Denmark. There's a new poll out about the happiest country on earth. Give a guess. Anguilla, Italy. Anguilla? Italy?Finland, though I, one of those Nordic (close close close ) Nordic countries. Sweden.Getting closer. Starts with a D, sounds like (Denmark) landmark...Yeah.Denmark, there you go. What do you think is the happiest country? It's my country. It's your country? It's Denmark. You are from Denmark? Yeah. What are the chances! She's from Denmark. You've heard that song, Don't Worry, Be Happy? Yeah. Is that your national anthem? No, not yet. But it could be. Could be. Don't worry, be happy. How about my ma'am you're saying man mark? (I love it, love it) (Inaudible...)But there is something to be said about the balance, you know, people who talk more about life and happiness (true) than work and in this country, we talk so much about work. It's true. I think that, and lunch of herring. Herring is not as pickled as this. . . ) Herring and gulag (smog as board)But seriously, the question: You said the islands, all these places, would you want to live there? Would you want to live in Fiji instead of here? Not forever. But Denmark is a beautiful place. I have been there. (It is) (yeah). I have to say it is very very inspiring. It is. . . We love America, but we love America. It's joky we're happier? ExactlyContest desire.

McCain warned against a premature U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, but also said as president he would pursue closer relations with allies abroad. McCain spoke to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and described the threat of radical Islamic terrorism as the transcendent challenge of our time. But McCain also sought to put some distance between himself and the Bush administration with a commitment to do a better job of reaching out to U.S. allies around the world for support and consultation on a wide range of issues. Our great power does not mean we can do whatever we want whenever we want, nor should we assume we have all the wisdom and knowledge necessary to succeed," he said. "We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies." McCain spoke of expanding links with Latin America, urged China to move toward political liberalization, and promised to make the eradication of malaria in Africa a priority if he is elected president. But McCain devoted a large part of his speech to warning against the dangers of a hasty withdrawal from Iraq. McCain said he agreed that Iraqi political leaders must do more to take responsibility for their own security. But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said a U.S. defeat in Iraq would hand al-Qaida a victory and would threaten the ed States for years to come. We have incurred a moral responsibility in Iraq," he added. "It would be an unconscionable act of betrayal, a stain on our character as a great nation, if we were to walk away from the Iraqi people and consign them to the horrendous violence, ethnic cleansing and possibly genocide that would follow a reckless, irresponsible and premature withdrawal." McCain's views on Iraq differ sharply with those of both remaining Democrats in the race, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Both have promised to begin a withdrawal of U.S. troops if they are elected president, and both have criticized McCain for wanting to continue President Bush's policy in Iraq. Obama was back on the campaign trail in North Carolina after a few days vacation and once again promised to end the war in Iraq if elected in November. So our nation is at war on two battlefronts," he said. "We are fighting a war that we need to win in Afghanistan against al-Qaida, and a war that should never have been authorized and should never have been waged that has distracted us from the war we need to win." Senator Clinton continued to campaign in Pennsylvania, which holds a primary on April 22. Clinton has a big lead in the polls in Pennsylvania and a victory there is essential to keep alive her hope of winning the Democratic presidential nomination. Obama, however, holds the lead in the overall delegate count. 40
International Agencies Regret US Decision to Abort Burma Mercy Mission援缅被拒 美舰队撤离缅甸外海 ed States naval ships with relief supplies for cyclone victims in Burma are leaving the area, because the Burmese government refused their help. International agencies trying to help more than two million storm survivors regret the loss of the navy's resources. The USS Essex and several support vessels are leaving the seas near Burma after spending three weeks trying to deliver aid to the survivors of Cyclone Nargis. The French navy also has given up efforts to send in aid and is heading away from the Bay of Bengal. Burma's government has rejected offers to use other country's military helicopters to carry relief supplies. Instead, in the past week the World Food Program received two helicopters from Africa, but aid experts say that is not enough. WFP spokesman Paul Risley says it is unfortunate that U.S. Navy helicopters will not be available to bring aid across the Irrawaddy Delta. And this is truly unfortunate because these helicopters represented immediate heavy lift capacity in the area and would have been a standard operating procedure for the U.N. for relief agencies in responding," he said. Military helicopters from several nations played a vital role in relief efforts in Indonesia after the 2004 tsunami. They also helped in the aftermath of a cyclone that hit Bangladesh last year. Burma's state media say the government rejected the U.S. military aircraft because it feared an invasion, despite U.S. assurances that wanted only to provide aid. The cyclone that hit a month ago left more than two million people in need of food, shelter and medical care. The storm killed 78,000 and left 56,000 missing. International donors have condemned the Burmese government's roadblocks to relief efforts. U.S. officials say the delays may have cost "tens of thousands of lives." The ed Nations and ASEAN recent reached an agreement with Burma to allow international aid workers more access to the areas worst hit by the storm. But U.N. officials said Wednesday relief efforts need to expand rapidly, since just one point three million people had gotten any sort of assistance. The Irrawaddy Delta is Burma's main rice-growing region, but U.N. officials said Wednesday that 60 percent of the paddy fields were damaged in the storm. About 16 percent are too badly damaged for the next planting season, in July. The WFP's Risley says international food aid to the hardest-hit areas could last a year. In a situation such as this it would be very typical for the World Food Program to continue providing food rations through general deliveries for families and farmers in the delta area, certainly through the next six months, certainly through the next harvest. It is likely that harvest will not be able to take place for an entire year," he said. U.N. officials say few farmers have returned to their land because they have no food, shelter or farm tools. In addition, roads throughout the region remain unusable.
