The Zetasizer Nano Z is the perfect system for measuring zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility of colloids and nanoparticles, when the measurement of size or molecular weight is not required.

The Zetasizer Nano Z uses micro-electrophoresis / electrophoretic light scattering technology to measure zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility.
Laser Doppler Micro-electrophoresis is used to measure zeta potential. An electric field is applied to a solution of molecules or a dispersion of particles, which then move with a velocity related to their zeta potential. This velocity is measured using a patented laser interferometric technique called M3-PALS (Phase analysis Light Scattering). This enables the calculation of electrophoretic mobility, and from this, the zeta potential and zeta potential distribution.
The software is designed to be versatile and rich in features without compromising ease of use. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) simplify routine measurements, a quality factor gives a single place for confirmation of data quality, and an expert advice system is provided to assist with data interpretation.
The MPT-2 Autotitrator enables the study of the effect of changes in pH, conductivity, or any additive to be automated.
A range of disposable and reusable cells are available to optimize the measurement in terms of sample volume, concentration and flow measurement.
Other options include filters to improve the measurement of fluorescent samples, a temperature range extension to 120?C and a viscometer to determine the sample viscosity to the accuracy required for the techniques used.

Simplify pH, conductivity and additive titrations on your Zetasizer Nano
A cost effective accessory designed to automate the measurement of size and zeta potential as a function of pH, conductivity or any soluble additive.
Viscosity measurement with speed, simplicity and accuracy.
The SV-10 measures viscosity with the accuracy required for dynamic light scattering, for the conversion of diffusion speed to size, and electrophoretic mobility to zeta potential, in an extremely simple and rapid system.
Cell and cuvette options
Disposable folded capillary cell (DTS1070)
Eliminate sample cross contamination between zeta potential measurements using a completely disposable cell.
The zeta potential of colloids and molecules is extremely sensitive to contamination from components of a previous sample used in a measurement cell. The use of a disposable cell completely eliminates this potential contamination issue.
The folded capillary cell provides the benefits of the accuracy of measurement of a capillary cell with the ease of use of a disposable cell.
Although, disposable, including the electrodes, for low conductivity samples each cell can be used for hundreds of measurements if required.
The cell can be used with the autotitrator, where multiple measurements are routinely done over a wide pH range.
Universal 'dip' cell kit
Reusable solvent resistant cell.
The dip cell is used for the measurement of zeta potential of samples in aqueous and non-aqueous dispersants, and is designed to be cleaned and reused. It is for batch measurements using standard polystyrene or glass cuvettes.
High concentration zeta potential cell kit
Save time and effort by measuring zeta potential with little or no dilution.
The high concentration cell enables the measurement of the zeta potential of samples with little or no dilution in any Zetasizer Nano system that measures zeta potential.
The cell has a flow configuration so can be used for stop-flow size and zeta potential measurements using an MPT-2 autotitrator as well as batch measurements.
Surface zeta potential accessory
Extend the application of the Zetasizer Nano to measure the zeta potential of material surfaces.
The characterization of surfaces and interfaces is critical in a wide range of industries including consumer products, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals and life sciences. In each of these application areas, the interaction of molecules and particles with surfaces can influence the material properties of the end product.
The surface zeta potential accessory enables the measurement of the zeta potential of flat surfaces such as filter paper, silica, polymers and bone, using a standard Zetasizer Nano system.

Factory fitted options
50mW 532nm DPSS laser
For use where the sample is incompatible with the standard 633nm laser, either because the sample absorbs or fluoresces, or the sample is photosensitive.
This addition of this option does not affect the system specifications.
Narrow band filters
Useful where the sample fluoresces. Eliminates scattering due to fluorescence to improve the signal to background ratio.
High temperature capability
Increases the high temperature capability from 90°C to 120°C. Suitable for samples in wax media that melt above 90°C.
Degasser for MPT-2 autotitrator
Titrants used by the MPT-2 titrator need regular degassing, ideally before each titration.
Degassing is required to remove bubbles that can affect the volume of titrant dispensed. This is particularly important close to pH 7 where low volumes of titrant are required.
The degasser is a highly recommended ‘Fit and forget’ accessory that continuously degasses titrants which improves the speed of titrations and the accuracy of reaching the target pH. This gives more evenly spaced pH points.

Electrophoretic light scattering (ELS) or zeta potential instruments use first principles in their measurement protocol. They cannot therefore, be calibrated. However, they can be verified that they are operating correctly, by measuring a suitable zeta potential standard.
Samples for zeta potential measurements need to be optically clear and may require dilution. The way in which the dilution is performed is absolutely critical in determining the zeta potential value measured.
Multiple scattering refers to the phenomenon where photons scattered from the sample are re-scattered from neighboring particles prior to reaching the instrument detector.

关于沉淀颗粒的粒径与电位的检测
我用CaCl2和Na2SO3反应生成CaSO3沉淀,考察空化时间对生成的亚硫酸钙的影响。用Zetasizer&&Nano ZS90测沉淀颗粒的粒径与电位。有谁知道如何处理样品?测粒径和电位用什么分散剂?我用的是十二烷基苯磺酸钠(阴离子表面活性剂),但对颗粒的电位影响太大,但不加分散剂又不能测,是不是得加一种非离子表面活性剂呢?但又不知加什么?谢谢
谢谢,我加上分散剂测得的亚硫酸钙的沉淀颗粒的粒径是几百纳米有时是一千多纳米。不加分散剂的话一会就沉淀,仪器测量就不准。测粒径和电位的话,静置后测清液的粒径和电位能代表亚硫酸钙沉淀颗粒的粒径和zeta电位吗?对颗粒的zeta电位的含义不是很明白。
谢谢,如果我考察亚硫酸钙沉淀颗粒的zeta电位,得在同一ph下分别测电位。用非离子表面活性剂分散亚硫酸钙沉淀颗粒,是不是对颗粒的电位无影响,我查的非离子表面活性剂是在水中不电离。还有沉淀颗粒的电位的大小说明什么?对这些知识不是很明白。
一两句说不清楚,找本表面化学书看看。
这么大的颗粒,自然是很容易沉淀的...但加离子型分散剂肯定会影响测试结果,非离子型的可以试试~~
清液的粒径是体系中分散性最好的那部分颗粒的粒径,跟全部离子真实粒径会有一定偏差(甚至很大偏差)~
至于zeta电势,确实不容易说明白,简单理解就是:水合(溶剂合)颗粒表面电荷的一种度量,其值与颗粒粒径、颗粒表面荷电基团数量、类型均有关系,但难于建立普适而明确的数学关系(不知现在是否还是这样...)~

Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS
Malvern Zetasizer combined 3 major techniques:
1. Dynamic Laser Scattering for Particle Size measurement
2. Static Laser Scattering for Mw measurement

Important Notification:
* () Cuvettes should be rinsed and sonicated in your buffers and/or ddH2O before applying samples for measurements.

Dynamic Light Scattering*
Dynamic light scattering (DLS) also known as Photon Correlation Spectrpscopy (PCS). By detecting the laser scattered from solution, the velocity of Brownian motion could be used for calculating the size of the particle. Please refer to

Static Light Scattering
Like DLS, Static light scattering (SLS) also measures the scattered light. But, instead of measuring the time-dependent fluctuations in the scattering intensity,
SLS makes use of the time-averaged intensity of scattered light instead.
When particles in solution are much smaller than the wavelength of the incident light,
the angular dependence of the scattering intensity is lost.
The type of scattering is known as .
The intensity of scattered light produced by particles is propotional to the product of weight-average Mw and the concentration of the particle.
By measuring the Intensity of scattered light of various concentration at 1 angle,
the Debye Plot is presnt to allow the determination of both absolute Mw and 2nd Virial Coefficient.
Zeta Potential
The net charge at the particle surface affects the distribution of ions in the surrounding, thus forming an electrical double layer around each particle.
When a particle moves, ions within the boundary move with it, and vice versa.
